Special treats for Sewa Day in Leicester

By superadmin

On Wednesday 1st October 2014, elderly & disability support groups were treated to a special day of service courtesy of Leicester’s Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh communities. St Philip’s Centre, a charity which works to advance inter faith relations, worked in partnership with the faith communities for this needy cause.

Sewa Day, a special day of service to the needy, brought together the Ramgarhia Social Sisters, Action Deafness and the Syston Project under one roof for a special day of food, arts and crafts, entertainment and music. Nearly 100 people came together in a spirit of friendship and harmony at the Ramgarhia Centre in Leicester.

Gurpreet Grewal-Santini, volunteer from the Sikh community said, “Our ‘Sewa Day Celebration’ was superbly received. Nearly 100 people from many different backgrounds took part in the day which was full of fun and which was truly appreciated. The diversity of the participants was particularly pleasing”.

Rupa Kanabar, a volunteer from the Hindu community added, “Sewa Day serves as an important reminder that here in Leicester, we can deliver selfless service to all our communities. By bringing different groups together from both city and county, we all enjoyed and gained so much from each other”.

The Sewa Day Celebration provided a menu of tea, coffee, Indian sweets and snacks and fruit. Cultural musical instruments were demonstrated and free hearing tests were carried out. A number of organisations played an important role in supporting the day including Allsopp Kanabar Insurance, Bobby’s Restaurant, Paul’s Fruit & Veg Wholesalers and Leicester College.
